THE WORD

I am the vine; you are the branches…
Apart from me you can do nothing. But if you abide in me and my words abide in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted! When you produce much fruit, you are my true disciples. This brings great glory to my Father.  From John 15

In writing to the Colossians, Paul wanted to make the difference between The Word, Jesus, and God extremely clear. “Christ is the visible image of the invisible God.” You’ll find his full description in Colossians 1:15-23 NLT. Paul is unlocking the importance of knowing who God is, while at the same time revealing God came to earth in human flesh to fulfill his promise to Abram, in Genesis 15, to cover the sins of his people. The following is a brief synopsis of The Word, who he is, the power he has, and the privilege he has given you as you reflect his image. Enjoy the journey and visit often.

Hebrews 11:3
Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

Psalm 33:6
By the word of the Lord were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.

John 1:1-14
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God.  All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made.…  And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Psalm 90:2
Before the mountains were brought forth, or before you even formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, you are God.

John 8:58
Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.

Job 26:7
He stretched out the north over the empty place and hung the earth upon nothing. He wraps the rain in his thick clouds,
and the clouds don’t burst with the weight. He covers the face of the moon, shrouding it with his clouds. He created the horizon when he separated the waters; he set the boundary between day and night. The foundations of heaven tremble; they shudder at his rebuke. By his power the sea grew calm. By his skill he crushed the great sea monster. His Spirit made the heavens beautiful, and his power pierced the gliding serpent. These are just the beginning of all that he does, merely a whisper of his power.  Who, then, can comprehend the thunder of his power?”

Isaiah 40:12
Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?

Psalm 95:1-44
In his hand are the deep places of the earth: the strength of the hills is his also.  The sea is his, and he made it: and his hands formed the dry land.

Genesis 1:26
Let us make man in our image.

Prov 8:22-31
“The Lord formed me [wisdom] from the beginning, before he created anything else.  I was appointed in ages past, at the very first, before the earth began. I was born before the oceans were created, before the springs bubbled forth their waters. Before the mountains were formed, before the hills, I was born—before he had made the earth and fields and the first handfuls of soil. I was there when he established the heavens, when he drew the horizon on the oceans. I was there when he set the clouds above, when he established springs deep in the earth. I was there when he set the limits of the seas, so they would not spread beyond their boundaries.
And when he marked off the earth’s foundations, I was the architect at his side.
I was his constant delight, rejoicing always in his presence. And how happy I was with the world he created; how I rejoiced with the human family!

Psalm 147:4
He tells the number of the stars; he calls them all by their names.

Psalm 19:1
The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows his hands work.

Exodus 20:11
For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it.

Isaiah 43:7
“Do not be afraid, for I am with you. I will gather you and your children from east and west. I will say to the north and south, ‘Bring my sons and daughters back to Israel from the distant corners of the earth. Bring all who claim me as their God, for I have made them for my glory. It was I who created them.’ Even every one that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yes, I have made him.”

Romans 1:20
For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse.  They know the truth about God because he has made it obvious to them.  Ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So, they have no excuse for not knowing God.

Psalm 104:1-10
O Lord my God, you are very great; you are clothed with honor and majesty. Who covers himself with light as with a garment: who stretches out the heavens like a curtain: Who lays the beams of his chambers in the waters: who makes the clouds his chariot: who walks upon the wings of the wind: Who make his angels spirits; his ministers a flaming fire: Who laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not be removed forever. You covered it with the deep as with a garment: the waters stood above the mountains. At thy rebuke they fled; at the voice of thy thunder they hasted away.  They go up by the mountains; they go down by the valleys unto the place that you have founded for them.  You have set a bound that they may not pass over; that they turn not again to cover the earth. He sends the springs into the valleys, which run among the hills.

Psalm 136:1-9
Give thanks to the Lord for he is good. Give thanks to the God of gods.  Give thanks to the Lord of lords; to him who alone does great wonders; to him that by wisdom made the heavens; to him that stretched out the earth above the waters; to him that made great lights; the sun to rule by day; the moon and stars to rule by night – for his mercy endures forever.

Psalm 148:1-12
Praise ye the Lord. Praise ye the Lord from the heavens: praise him in the heights. Praise ye him, all his angels: praise ye him, all his hosts.  Praise ye him, sun and moon: praise him, all ye stars of light. Praise him, ye heavens of heavens, and ye waters that be above the heavens.  Let them praise the name of the Lord: for he commanded, and they were created. He hath also established them forever and ever: he hath made a decree which shall not pass. Praise the Lord from the earth, ye dragons, and all deeps: Fire, and hail; snow, and vapors; stormy wind fulfilling his word: Mountains, and all hills; fruitful trees, and all cedars: Beasts, and all cattle; creeping things, and flying fowl: Kings of the earth, and all people; princes, and all judges of the earth: Both young men, and maidens; old men, and children.

John 17: 5-9
And now, O Father, glorify me with the glory that I had with you before the world was. I have manifested your name to the men that you gave me out of the world: they were yours, and you gave them to me; and they have kept your word. Now they have known that all things whatsoever you have given me are of you. For I have given unto them the words that you gave me; and they have received them and have known surely that I came out from you, and they have believed that you did send me.  I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them that you gave me; for they are yours.

Ephesians 1:4
According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love.

John 17:24
Father, I will that they also, whom you have given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which you have given me: for you loved me before the foundation of the world.

Isaiah 55:6-11
Seek the Lord while he may be found, call upon him while he is near: let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return to the Lord, and he will have mercy on him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, said the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. Just like the rain comes down, and the snow falls from heaven, it does not return there, but goes forth and waters the earth and causes it to bud and bloom and bring seed to the sower, and bread to the eater. So shall my word be that goes forth out of my mouth: it shall not return to me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

Deuteronomy 8:3
And he humbled you, and suffered you to hunger, and fed you with manna, which you knew not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make you know that man does not live by bread only, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of the Lord does man live.

Psalm 119:160
Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endures forever.

1 Peter 1:18-21
Forasmuch as you know that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you, whom by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.

Proverbs 4:4
He taught me also, and said unto me, “Let your heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live.

Romans 4:17
As it is written, I have made you a father of many nations, before him whom he believed, even God, who quickens the dead, and calls those things that are not, as though they were so they will be.

James 3:4-5
And a small rudder makes a huge ship turn wherever the pilot chooses to go, even though the winds are strong. In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches. But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire.

James 4:3
You ask, and receive not, because you ask amiss, that you may consume it upon your lusts.

1 John 3:22
And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

John 14:13-14
And whatsoever you shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

Prov 4:20-27
My son, attend to my words; incline your ear unto my sayings.  Let them not depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart.  For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.  Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.  Put away from you a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from you.  Let your eyes look right on, and let your eyelids look straight before you.  Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.  Turn not to the right hand, nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.

Deuteronomy 30:11-20
For this commandment, which I command you this day, it is not hidden from you, neither is it far off.  It is not in heaven, that you should say, Who shall go up for us to heaven, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it?  Neither is it beyond the sea that you should say, Who shall go over the sea for us, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it?  But the word is very nigh unto you, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that you may do it.  See, I have set before you this day life and good, and death and evil; In that I command you this day to love the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgments, that you may live and multiply: and the Lord thy God shall bless you in the land whither you go to possess it.  But if your heart turn away, so that you will not hear, but shalt be drawn away, and worship other gods, and serve them; I denounce unto you this day, that you shall surely perish, and that you shall not prolong your days upon the land, whither you pass over Jordan to go to possess it.  I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both you and thy seed may live: That you may love the Lord thy God, and that you may obey his voice, and that you may cleave unto him: for he is thy life, and the length of thy days: that you may dwell in the land which the Lord swore unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.

Proverbs 10:19-21
In the multitude of words there is sin: but he that refrains his lips is wise.  The tongue of the just is as choice silver: the heart of the wicked is little worth. The lips of the righteous feed many: but fools die for want of wisdom.

Hebrews 4:12
For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Revelation 19:15
And out of his mouth goes a sharp sword that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

Ephesians 6:11-17
Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against that stalking devil.  For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.  Wherefore put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.  Stand therefore, having your loins girded about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;  And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith you shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.  And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God and PRAY.

Isaiah 49:2
He has made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand hath he hid me and made me a polished shaft; in his quiver hath he hid me.

Jeremiah 29:11
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, said the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Then shall you call upon me, and you shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. And you shall seek me, and find me, when you shall search for me with all your heart.

Job 38:4-41
Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell me, if you know so much.  Who determined its dimensions and stretched out the surveying line? What supports its foundations, and who laid its cornerstone as the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy? “Who kept the sea inside its boundaries as it burst from the womb, and as I clothed it with clouds and wrapped it in thick darkness? For I locked it behind barred gates, limiting its shores. I said, ‘This far and no farther will you come. Here your proud waves must stop!’ “Have you ever commanded the morning to appear and caused the dawn to rise in the east? Have you made daylight spread to the ends of the earth, to bring an end to the night’s wickedness? As the light approaches, the earth takes shape like clay pressed beneath a seal; it is robed in brilliant colors. The light disturbs the wicked and stops the arm that is raised in violence. “Have you explored the springs from which the seas come? Have you explored their depths? Do you know where the gates of death are located? Have you seen the gates of utter gloom? Do you realize the extent of the earth? Tell me about it if you know! “Where does light come from, and where does darkness go? Can you take each to its home? Do you know how to get there? “Have you visited the storehouses of the snow or seen the storehouses of hail? I have reserved them as weapons for the time of trouble, for the day of battle and war. Where is the path to the source of light? Where is the home of the east wind? “Who created a channel for the torrents of rain? Who laid out the path for the lightning? Who makes the rain fall on barren land, in a desert where no one lives? Who sends rain to satisfy the parched ground and make the tender grass spring up? “Does the rain have a father? Who gives birth to the dew?  Who is the mother of the ice? Who gives birth to the frost from the heavens? For the water turns to ice as hard as rock, and the surface of the water freezes.  “Can you direct the movement of the stars—binding the cluster of the Pleiades or loosening the cords of Orion?  Can you direct the sequence of the seasons or guide the Bear with her cubs across the heavens?   Do you know the laws of the universe? Can you use them to regulate the earth? “Can you shout to the clouds and make it rain? Can you make lightning appear and cause it to strike as you direct? Who gives intuition to the heart and instinct to the mind? Who is wise enough to count all the clouds? Who can tilt the water jars of heaven when the parched ground is dry and the soil has hardened into clods? “Can you stalk prey for a lioness and satisfy the young lions’ appetites as they lie in their dens or crouch in the thicket? Who provides food for the ravens when their young cry out to God and wander about in hunger?

Revelation 19:13
And he [Jesus] was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.

Isaiah 42:8
I am YHVH: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.

Closing Thought:

Is it possible to know Jesus, whose name is The Word of God, without knowing God’s word?
