COVENANT OF SALT

There are several “covenants” documented in the Old Testament between God and his people. One which applies now perhaps more than any other is the Covenant of Salt

Salt cleanses. It purifies. It has a lasting effect. But salt can also have a negative impact. Bakers know not to add salt to the dough mix before it rises because it will impede or halt the yeast’s purpose to puff up the dough. And, conversely, too much salt will ruin a recipe. It must be used in moderation.

Covenants are ancient symbols of unbreakable friendships and alliances that were to be preserved. Such agreements are solid, unbreakable and everlasting.

The Covenant

Don’t you know that the Lord, the God of Israel, has given the kingship of Israel to David and his descendants forever by a covenant of salt?” 2 Chronicles 13:5

“All the heave offerings of the holy things, which the children of Israel offer unto the Lord, have I given you, and your sons and your daughters with you, by a statute forever: it is a covenant of salt forever before the Lord unto you and to your seed with you.” Numbers 18:19

“And every oblation of your meat offering shall you season with salt; neither shall you suffer the salt of the covenant of your God to be lacking from your meat offering: with all your offerings you shall offer salt.” Leviticus 2:13

“And he said, Bring me a new cruse, and put salt therein. And they brought it to him. And he went forth unto the spring of the waters, and cast the salt in there, and said, Thus saith the Lord, I have healed these waters; there shall not be from thence any more death or barren land.” 2 Kings 2:20-21

“You are the salt of the earth: but if the salt has lost his savor, with what shall it be salted? it is therefore good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.” Matthew 5:13

“Everyone will be salted with fire. “Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can you make it salty again? Have salt among yourselves, and be at peace with each other.” Mark 9:49-50

“Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification.” Romans 14:19

“Therefore, let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and I wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.” 1 Corinthians 5:8

“Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer every man.” Colossians 4:6

It is a covenant of salt forever before the Lord.
